Two balls of wool that go in the drum with the wet load and do the work a bottle of softener or a box of sheets used to do.
They bounce between garments and keep the load from tangling into a rope, which lets warm air circulate and shortens the cycle. Wool is porous, so the balls take up some of the moisture as they tumble. Fabric comes out softer, with fewer creases set into it, which means less time at the ironing board.
